Public land

Anyone know any remote public lands that I can camp for an extended period of time(4-6 weeks)? Maybe hiking 1-2 days in?

Also when in Minnesota is the safest time to do this?

Boundry Waters maybe?
What do you mean by safest time?

Going on the lam, eh?

Consider any of the state forests.

MN State Forest Map
MN State Forest Rules
From the MNDNR website:
Camping

DNR Forestry asks all overnight campers to help protect state forests by only using designated campsites. Camping on forest lands outside of developed campgrounds is allowed with some conditions. No permit is required. If camping outside of designated areas, please practice the "leave no trace" camping ethic.

I believe you can do the same thing on national forest but I'm not motivated to find out for sure.

I have no idea what you mean by "safest time". Safe from critters? Safe from weather?

i meant in terms of hunting. I dont necessarily want to get shot on accident by a hunter.

Im not going on the lamb. haha. I just want to go out in nature an live off the land for a bit. I have spent a lot of time studying survival and bushcraft and would like to use my training in a real world setting.

Camp out in Minneapolis or St. Paul. That will put your survival skills to the test. icon_popcorn

State/National Forests are the way to go... I've done several 2-8 week trips there... You would have to do dispersed camping, since campsites have a 14 day/month maximum, but that sounds like what you were wanting to do anyway.

Superior National Forest
Chippewa National Forest
MN State Forests

If you've never done a 2 week or more trip, I would suggest warming yourself up to the longer trips... They are not something to just dive into (a la Chris McCandless). You can study all you want, but shorter trips will let you know what you need to improve on, gear you need, gear you don't need, etc.+

I assume you plan on trapping/hunting for food, make sure that you get the appropriate permits/licenses.

As far as time goes, I would recommend spring or early summer. There are not many hunters around, lots of vegetation and, not insanely hot. As you move into fall more hunting seasons open up, and there will be more loaded guns in the woods.

Let me know if you have any other questions... Sounds like quite an adventure! Have fun, and be safe and smart. icon_Cheers

I really wouldn't worry too much about accidentally being shot by a hunter. Wear a blaze orange cap and you should be in good shape. If you are planning on surviving off the land you probably are going to have to do this during small game season which starts mid Sept. and runs through the winter.

Excellent point on the small game season... You could not hunt/trap in the spring/early summer. (Except crow in July and Spring Turkey)

i was thinking mostly fishing. i can bring some dried goods with me, but not much. Are there limits on what/how much you can fish in state forests?

Also I am very confident in the gear I would pack for a trip of this length.

Is it ok to trap small game in a forest? Even in an off season?

Limits and seasons do not differ in state parks, forests ect..

Limit is a limit. Refer to the fishing regs. Trapping out of season in a state park out of season is ILLEGAL.
